The Lego sets and characters of Ninjago were the smash hit for Lego in 2011 and there’s a new story and new toys for 2012. Frankly the choice of products is pretty overwhelming for any parent. Let us introduce you to Lego Ninjago Kai. Kai is the red ninja and he’s a fiery character. Ninjago Kai Story

In the original Ninjago story Kai is pivotal to the plot. He was a blacksmith like his father and, indeed it was his father who was entrusted with a map showing the location of 4 Golden weapons. The map was hidden and Kai’s father has now passed leaving Kai none the wiser until the evil skeleton army of Lord G turn up looking for it. Kai battles bravely but can’t stop the evil hoard from kidnapping his sister Nya. Indeed Kai himself is only saved by Sensei Wu the good and wise brother of evil Lord G.

Kai has a fiery and independent temperament and is looking for revenge but Sensei Wu manages to convince Kai to join him and three other recruits, who he takes to the mountains to train as Ninja. When all four are ready they set off to reclaim the four golden weapons, save Nya and defeat Lord Garmadon.

So enough of the background story, how can you buy the Ninjago Kai for your kids or your friend’s kids and at what price? You can buy the Ninjago Kai mini figure on his own, with his spinner for Spinjitzu battles, or you can get hold of him as part of a larger Lego Ninjago set. The different Ninjago Lego sets allow you to recreate a different location within the world of Ninjago which, in turn, are all part of the bigger story. Lets’ begin.

Lego Ninjago Kai 2111

So here’s Kai in his first incarnation as a mini figure complete with his spinner and battle cards ready for action. Released back in January 2011 he is something of a collector’s item now and therefore harder to find and more expensive. This would make a great gift for the seriously Ninjago obsessed. Lego Ninjago Kai 2111 comes with his golden katana sword which is in fact the original sword of fire, one of the four golden weapons. This Kai mini figure also has a spear and a double edged dagger. With his character card, four battle cards and orange spinner base kids can battle them against other Ninjago mini figures. Lego Ninjago Kai ZX 9561

Skip to the present and here is Lego Ninjago Kai ZX released in January 2012. As of writing this you can buy him easily at his normal retail price of $9.99 but like his predecessor in a years time he will no doubt be another collector’s item and considerably more expensive. This spinning mini figure is considerably more sophisticated in its looks and weaponry. Here you can clearly see that his sword is indeed the legendary Sword of Fire and his outfit and spinner are a lot more impressive too. Essentially he has been rereleased here because our intrepid Ninjas begin a whole new story in 2012 against new foes, but more of that later. Ninjago 2011 Lego sets featuring Kai

While you can buy Kai separately why not consider buying him already included in one of the many great Ninjago Lego sets of 2011? While these sets are more than $9.99 they offer, in Tommy’s’ opinion, better value for money and a longer user experience. Let’s get going!

Ninjago Kai and his Blacksmith Shop 2508

With this Lego set you can get the Kai mini figure and play with the Lego location where Kai’s story starts, his Blacksmith shop. It’s here that the secret map showing the location of the Four Golden Weapons is hidden and the set includes both Kai and the evil skeleton called Kruncha who has come to steal the map, let battle commence! The set also includes 189 pieces to put together and 9 different weapons. The roof can be hinged back to display a weapons rack on the ceiling and there’s another weapons rack inside. Ninjago Kai DX included with Nuckal’s ATV 2518

Here’s an opportunity to get a third version of Kai – Ninjago Kai DX mentioned in the title of this article. You can’t buy this version on its own; it comes with this set and two others which you can see directly below. Rather than a location this Lego set contains a vehicle to make, and no ordinary vehicle. Here you have a heavy duty all terrain vehicle complete with weaponry and belonging to another of the skeleton foes by the name of Nuckal. He’s out to kidnap Kai’s sister Nya. You can’t let that happen,” have at thee”! This version of the Kai mini figure comes with his spinner. At the time of writing Nuckal’s ATV is retailing at just under $20. Ninjago Kai DX and the Mountain Shrine 2254

Ninja’s aren’t just born you know, they have to train and train hard to be the best. Here’s your chance to buy Kai DX and his spinner again but this time with his Mountain Shrine Lego set location. This is where his mentor Sensei Wu has brought him, and the other ninjas, to learn the finer arts of becoming a fully fledged ninja. Here you get Kai DX, spinner and battle cards. The set is fun to build and includes plenty of weapons and a skeleton training figure to practice your best sword work on; there are 169 Lego pieces inside the box… Check Prices

Ninjago Kai, Dragon and the Fire Temple 2507

Now if you’re looking to give an extra special Ninjago gift to a certain someone special then this is probably it. You can read Tommy’s Ninjago Fire Temple review by clicking here. Suffice to say this is an extravagant way to get hold of the Ninjago Kai DX mini-figure but definitely a very impressive way. One thing we haven’t mentioned in this article is how each of the ninja enlists a dragon to help them on their quest and the fire dragon included in this large Fire Temple Lego set is Kei’s dragon, named Flame by Kai. This top rated Ninjago set comes with a lot more than Kai and the Fire Dragon. The set has 1174 pieces and comes with all these mini figures too: Sensei Wu, Ninjago Zane, Nya, Lord Garmadon, Samukai, and Kruncha. Ninjago Kai and the Ninjago Ninja Ambush 2258

This is a fun little Lego set and another cheap way to buy your Ninjago Kai mini figure. Following on from Kai’s training Sensei Wu sends him off to the bamboo forest to protect one of the golden weapons, the golden Scythe of Quakes. So that’s what he does! This set includes Ninjago Kai 2111 and another skeleton foe called Bonezai. The Lego Ninjago ninja ambush play set is small but lots of fun and very popular with customers on Amazon. It consists of a thicket of bamboo which Kai hides in before you hit a button and propel Kai through the bamboo at his enemy Bonezai, brilliant! Ninjago Kai and Garmadon’s Dark Fortress 2505

When the going gets tough the tough get going and it doesn’t get any tougher for Kai then facing up to the evil Lord Garmadon in his own Dark Fortress. Like the Fire Temple this is one of the biggest Ninjago Lego sets in the 2011 collection although surprisingly the number of mini figures in this set is limited. You would have though all the Ninjas would be here in a final confrontation with the forces of darkness but in fact it’s left to Kai (mini figure 2111) and his sister Nya to do battle against Lord Garmadon and three of his skeleton henchmen Samukai, Chopov, and Bonezai. Kai is without his golden sword, spinner or cards and must do battle with a plane sword in the hope of capturing the three other golden weapons, the Shurikens of Ice, the Golden Scythe and the Nunchakas of Lightning. He’ll need all the skills he possesses against the Fortresses defences and the giant spider! This is another impressive set but given the contents and the price tag (around $80) possibly the least value for money. Still it’s a must have for the true Ninjago fan. Check Prices

New 2012 Ninjago Lego sets featuring Ninjago Kai

As mentioned 2012 sees the start of a whole new story for our intrepid Ninjas. This time they’re up against Lord Garmadon’s son, Lloyd Garmadon no less, and his hoard of serpent foes the Serpentine. The new Kai ZX mini figure appears in four products and, excitingly, in three different guises. Here they are.

Ninjago Kai’s Blade Cycle 9441

This time it’s the ninja’s turn to have their own battle vehicles and Kai has himself a very cool futuristic motor cycle with plenty of blade weaponry. Chase after the dreaded Rattla mini figure, also included, and get hold of the gold Hypobrai staff. This version of Kai ZX has a new helmet and improved shoulder armour that you can attach swords to…cool. Check Prices

Jetpack Ninjago Kai ZX included with the Rattlecopter 9443

Unfortunately the foe also have some futuristic vehicles buy can Kai get ready to defend himself from the awesome Rattlecopter. He sure can and in style as he takes to the skies with his jetpack. Yup Ninjago Kai ZX with a jetpack is pretty cool but he needs to be because the Rattlecopter contains another baddie, Fang-Suei, and his mini snakes, snake bombs and 4 flick missiles. It will all be worth it if Kai can get the golden Constrictai staff. Lloyd Garmadon is also included along with 2 golden ninja daggers and thunderbolt dagger. Ninjago Kai ZX in Spinner Battle Sets

As you should have gathered Lego is cashing in on the spinning battle tops craze with their Ninjago Spinners. Personally I think Lego sets when I think Lego, not battle tops. But hey the kids love them. So if your child is collecting the Ninjago spinners and battle cards and learning the art of Spinjitzu then you might be interested in these two battle sets.

Kendo Ninjago Kai ZX – Lego Spinner Battle Arena 9456

If your kid is really into Ninjago spinners then this would be a great gift. The set includes Ninjago Kai ZX in Kendo gear as well as Hypnobrai snake tribe baddie Rattla. A boundary marks out the arena and two great looking monsters, a snake and a dragon, with attack capabilities watch over the action. Choose from several different weapons from the weapons rack included. Not the cheapest set but one of the coolest for spinner battles. Check Prices

This smaller, and cheaper, battle arena is good value for money but you only get Kendo Kai and his spinner so you’ll need another spinner character before you can do battle. The small set and arena, with the large serpents head and weapons racks look great. Check Prices
