Nerf Vortex Nitron Blaster – Nerf Gun 2011

Nerf Vortex Nitron Blaster Christmas 2011If you’re looking for THE must have toy gun for your kids this Christmas then you won’t go far wrong with the Nerf Vortex Nitron. It’s widely expected to be the bestselling toy for boys this Christmas 2011 and it’s not difficult to see why. To say its light-years ahead of the cap guns we used to play Cowboys and Indians with when we were younger is a massive understatement. There is no comparison and frankly I’m jealous. Nerf Vortex Nitron Review

The Nerf Vortex Nitron is the biggest and baddest of the new Nerf Vortex range of toy weapons. There are four guns in the series, as well as the Nitron, there are two handguns, the Nerf Vortex Proton and the Nerf Vortex Vigilon and a hybrid, the Nerf Vortex Praxis, which can work as either a rifle or a handgun. So why is the Vortex Nitron the Nerf gun most likely to drive your boy crazy insane with excitement?

The Look

You should never underestimate the importance of looks when it comes to toy weaponry. From the box itself to the colors and detailing of the product, everything about the way a toy gun looks is of paramount importance. And when it comes to looks the Nerf Vortex Nitron is the Ferrari of toy guns. The Nerf Nitron has the shape and overall design of a real weapon which is important for any boy; these guns may just be for fun but they need to be credible. In the heat of battle these guns are more than just toys. While the main design of the Vortex Nitron is based in reality the colors and detailing all come together to give this gun a very futuristic feel. This sci-fi feel is great for boys and great for parents too. As a father I’m much more comfortable with the idea of kids playing in a futuristic make believe battle than I am with the idea of them re enacting some real war out in Afghanistan!

The Power

The main selling point of the Nerf Vortex Nitron blaster is that it’s fully automatic. The vortex range of guns use lightweight soft discs, about an inch and a half wide for ammo and the Nitron takes a clip with 20 of these discs. There are two triggers on the gun, one that starts the motor in the gun that will propel these discs to an incredible range of almost 50 feet, while the other trigger releases the disc. With 20 discs in the clip you have plenty of shots before you need to reload. Either hold down both triggers, and let out a stream of discs at rate of about one per second, or power up the weapon and shoot the discs more slowly. The slower you fire the further the ammo flies. This automatic firing is what will set this gun apart from the rest this Christmas and will make you wonder how you ever enjoyed playing with a spud gun!

The Facts

If you’re concerned at the idea of a toy for boys, which looks like a real weapon, shooting discs at great speed then don’t be. The Nerf ammo is very soft, a light weight and soft plastic centre surrounded by a foam barrier. Of course you must emphasises responsible usage, as per the instructions, which means never shooting this at someone’s head at close range, but it is quite normal to play with this type of toy both indoors as well as outdoors without fear of damage to anyone or anything (although you might want to clear the wine glasses away!) As great as the Nerf Vortex Nitron is there are a few things to consider especially if you’re buying it as a present this Christmas.

Firstly the Nitron is power hungry, it’s strong motor require 6 C batteries and the fancy night scope takes two AAA batteries, so be sure to have these pre-purchased. The size of the gun and the added weight of the batteries means that this is not the lightest Nerf gun on the market but should be fine for most boys aged 8 and above. The Nerf ammo is green, which to be honest isn’t very helpful when you’re playing outdoors in a grassy area. To avoid frustration you might well consider buying an extra ammo clip and extra discs to replace any lost discs.

How Far Does the Nerf Vortex Nitron Shoot?

While the Nerf Vortex Nitron range is awesome you shouldn’t expect too much in the way of accuracy at long range. The discs, as mentioned, are soft and light for safety but this also means they can get caught on even the mildest breeze. This isn’t much of a negative, while it’s fun to take long range shots most of the time you will be engaged in more close quarter battles. Also if you’re the kind of kid who likes to creep around and ambush your friends then this gun might not be right for you, the motor is quite loud so you won’t be surprising anyone!

The Conclusion

Since discovering the full Nerf gun range I have become a real fan of these toy guns. They are so much more impressive than anything I had back in my youth and I like the balance between a product that looks like the real thing but keeps the actual gameplay very innocent and harmless. The Nerf Vortex Nitron blaster deserves to be on the best 2011 Christmas toys list.
