The Nerf Vortex series of Nerf guns are sure to be one of the hot Christmas toys in 2011. There are four Nerf Vortex guns to choose from and frankly they all look fantastic. When I first saw the range I thought WOW. Then I thought, hmm perhaps I shouldn’t be encouraging boys to play with guns even if they are just toys. Then I thought WOW.

New Nerf Vortex Series
Boys will be boys and most of them, at some point, will want to shoot stuff at one another and pretend to be an all action hero. If you have to choose between your boy playing violent video games or playing make believe war with his friends the decision is a no brainer. Get them out in the fresh air, learning some serious hand to eye coordination and maybe some team building skills too. SIR YES SIR!
It’s a credit to Hasbro, the makers of the Nerf toy guns, that they look as serious and daunting as they do. To look at the pictures you could be forgiven for wondering if the Nerf Vortex series of guns weren’t just a little bit dangerous in the hands of an eight year old. However if you’ve actually ever seen one of these toy guns in action you would realise that the biggest threat would come from getting accidently hit in the head by the gun itself during the heat of battle. I don’t really see how anyone could get hurt from the green discs that the guns actually fire. The green Nerf discs are made from very soft and lightweight plastic which in turn are encased in a soft sponge. I’ve not tried it, and neither should you, but a direct hit in the head from a foot away probably wouldn’t hurt too much. I must emphasise though, as per the manufactures advice and instructions, you should never aim to shoot these Nerf guns directly at somebody’s head. Not Cool!
Nerf Ammo
A quick word about the Nerf ammo for the Nerf Vortex series…they’re green! Not very helpful if you’re playing outdoors on grass, these little suckers can get lost really quickly. Did Hasbro cynically do this on purpose? I don’t know but here’s some advice if you don’t want massive early frustration then I recommended purchasing extra ammo at the same time as buying the gun. Even if you often play with these guns indoors it’s worth having extra ammo as the disc ricochet and end up in some pretty weird places.
Also sold separately, which you might want to consider, is an extra magazine which comes with extra ammo. You can carry it around with you or the Nerf Vortex Nitron actually has a slot at the back of the gun which you can fix the extra clip into.
So let’s take a look at the four Nerf Vortex guns in the series:
Nerf Vortex Nitron
This is the puppy that you’re most likely to put at the top of your 2011 Christmas toy list. All the Nerf Vortex guns are cool, but this one is way cool. This blaster is fully automatic and, apart from the crazy colors, looks like a real weapon. There are 20 discs in the magazine and room for a further magazine of 20 discs at the back so you can keep the battle going longer than most. It’s got a monster range of almost 50 feet, although at that range and with even the most gentle breeze don’t expect much in the way of accuracy.
There are two triggers, one to get the electric motor going that powers the projection of the ammo and a second trigger to fire them. Hold down the motor trigger and one shot will really fly at full power. Hold down both triggers and the gun will fire the discs at about one per second although there’s less chance for power up on each shot so the discs won’t fly as far; but who cares when you’re blasting someone across the room at a range of about ten feet!??
Beware this beauty is battery intensive. You will need 6 C Batteries for the motor and a further 2 AAA batteries to illuminate the cool electronic scope. So perhaps rechargeable batteries could be the way forward. The scope isn’t big on actual function but it looks cool, and that’s half the battle right?
Overall you won’t be using the Nerf Vortex Nitron for secret ops as the sound of the motor isn’t going to let you get the drop on anyone, but seeing those little discs ping out at high speed is going to make up for that. Get to it soldier!
Nerf Vortex Praxis
If the Nerf Nitron is all about power then the Nerf Vortex Praxis is all about precision. This is a really adaptable Nerf gun for the serious young soldier.
You can use this toy gun in a number of different situations. With the stock to steady your aim you can do some damage as a sniper at distance. Remove the stock (which is compatible with other guns in the Nerf range) and you have a pump action weapon suitable for more close up battles.
The pump action has a great feel to it and this Nerf gun doesn’t jam which is a real plus. The Nerf Votex Praxis comes with a clip which takes 10 rounds of Nerf ammo. The clip is a more convenient size than the Nitron so you can quite easily carry an extra clip around with you (sold seperately). The automatic natuire of the Nerf Vortex Nitron is going to get a lot of players excited but the Nerf Vortex Praxis may well end up being arted as the best of the Nerf Vortex series.
Nerf Vortex Vigilon
The Nerf Vortex series of toy weapons was always going to need an iconic handgun and this is it. The Nerf Vortex Vigilon look great and has the same powerful long distance accuracy as the other guns in the range. In the mold of the Nerf Maverick this hand gun is a must have in your arsenal. One of the cheapest of the range it is also great value.
The Vortex Vigilon takes 5 nerf discs (although you can squeeze in a sixth!) which are loaded into a side chamber, rather than a clip and the gun makes a nice “lock and load” sound as you cock the gun. Carrying some extra Nerf ammo on you somewhere is pretty essential. There are some great Nerf pistols available but for the sheer long range of the Vortex guns this Nerf Vortex Vigilon is one of the best.
Nerf Vortex Proton
Sometime all you need is the one shot! And if Tommy had one shot left he’d want it to be in the Nerf Vortex Proton! On one level why would you want a pistol that only takes one Nerf disc? On another level it’s so cool to have this good looking pistol tucked away on your person for those moments in a Nerf battle when you’re in a tight spot.
Another great reason to get this smallest of the Nerf Vortex series is as a first Nerf gun for a younger child. What a relief for everyone that they can only reek havoc one shot at a time!
It’s too early to say wheteher the Nerf Vortex series will make all other Nerf guns obsolete but they are certainly going to be the talk of the battlefield for quite some time. Want to know more about Nerf Vortex series prices?
