As the name suggests this is the ultimate Transformers toy: a superb Ultimate Optimus Prime action figure, based on the Autobot leader and hero of the third Transformers movie – Dark of the Moon – with three modes, working lights and sounds! The ultimate gift or collector’s item, for both young and old fans of the Transformers.

If you were a child in the mid-eighties, you will know all about the Transformers toys from Hasbro – two races of transforming alien robots locked in an eternal battle between good and evil who also cunningly hide out on Earth disguised as vehicles, electric goods or weapons! Supported at the time by a comic strip and a cartoon animation, the Transformers were all the rage back in the day amongst kids all over the world. Now, thanks to the recent real-action CGI enhanced movie franchise, the Transformers are a big hit again with today’s kids, and this Ultimate Optimus Prime action figure is the most coveted of all the hot toys connected to the movie franchise!
Transformers Ultimate Optimus Prime
If you know someone who is Transfomers mad, then you simply can’t go wrong with this toy for Christmas or birthdays. Kids will love recreating battle scenes pitting the leader of the Autobots, Optimus Prime, against the evil Decepticons. And adult toy collectors and fans will enjoy paying homage to this seminal toy range that has something of a cult status.
Like all good Transformers toys, Ultimate Optimus Prime has different modes – three in all – as he changes from truck and trailer mode, to robot mode, to power-up combat mode (where basically, the trailer part of the truck mode becomes his “Omega Combat Armor” with extended wings and the addition of the “Ultimate Super Cannon” that comes with the toy). Standing 22 inches tall in the combat mode, this is an impressive toy with great detailing.
Plus the great bonus extra with this Optimus Prime toy is that he comes with electronic wizardry too which makes his weapon lights glow, and gives him special sound effects such as battle and missile launching sounds, and he even says the all important iconic words “I am Optimus Prime”! The Ultimate Optimus Prime quote?!
The only real downside, as far as we can see, is that this toy is supposedly for ages 5+, but it can be quite tricky to figure how to transform the toy between the truck/ robot/ combat mode which younger children might find challenging. Also, purist fans have complained that the action figure is not completely accurate to the film it is based on, but most kids won’t care about that at all!
Ultimate Transformers
So, overall, definitely the best Ultimate Transformer toy of the moment – but probably better for older kids (perhaps 8+) or adult collectors. This Dark of the Moon Optimus Prime has made it onto our Top Christmas toys for 2011 list as one of the best toys for boys.
